Growing Lettuce

Thursday, March 12, 2009

I am currently trying to reduce my footprint on the world by growing my own lettuce... at this rate, I'm going to starve to death. I acquired the supplies (i.e. seeds, soil, and a cup) to grow this lettuce at the New York Times' Green Fair about a month ago. Since then, I've been plagued with the duty of watering it every day and making sure it's in the sunlight.

Each day, it seems to get wimpier and wimpier, as if I'm not doing a good job. I kind of think I should put it in a new cup... perhaps a much larger cup, because it hasn't grown any taller for about a week. Perhaps its roots are being restricted by its tiny container.

Lastly, I kind of feel bad about eventually eating my lovely lettuce plant. We've come so far. I've nurtured it to be this wimpy little lettuce plant, and now I'm going to have to eat it? It just seems like murder. I don't think I'll be able to go through with it. I guess we'll see when the time comes.

I'm trying! I have a feeling I need to get a new pot and soil... so much work!

This is such a sweet & honest post. I love it! I'm totally with you on this. It's like eating your lil doggy or something. Thanks for sharing Erica!
